Your body already runs on a decentralised network — here's what that teaches us about blockchain

DeFi Freedom | Weekly Blog | August 2026

Here's a thought that might rewire how you see this whole space: decentralisation isn't some clever thing the tech world invented. It's the oldest operating system there is. Nature has been running on it since the beginning of time.

And once you see it, you can't unsee it.

The word everyone throws around — "node" — sounds cold and technical. But it's actually one of the most natural concepts in existence. Let me show you what I mean, because when you understand nodes, you understand why this new financial system is being built the way it is.

So what actually is a node?

Strip away the jargon and a node is simply a point in a network that can send, receive, or forward information. That's it.

Your computer is a node. Your phone is a node. A router, a server, a printer — all nodes. And a blockchain ledger sitting on someone's computer? That's a node too.

The word itself comes from nodule — an intersecting point, a place where a whole bunch of things come together in one spot. Hold onto that idea, because it's about to get interesting.

Nature got there first

Here's where it clicks. That definition — a point that sends, receives, and forwards data — describes you.

Your brain is a node. Your heart is a node, constantly reading and transmitting information (it's doing far more than pumping blood, but that's a story for another day). Every single cell in your body is a node — each one a tiny living system with its own version of a brain, its own digestive process, sending and receiving data around the clock. And your DNA? That's the master node, the original point everything else coalesced around to build you.

Now look outside. A tree is a textbook node — breathing in CO2, breathing out oxygen, and quietly transmitting information to other trees through the mycelium network beneath the soil. This isn't hippie talk, it's scientifically proven. The forest is literally a communication network.

Go bigger. The Earth is a node. The planets are nodes. The Sun is a node — emitting and receiving light, frequency, energy. As above, so below.

Everywhere you look in nature, you see the same pattern: no single boss in charge, just countless points all talking to each other, collaborating to keep the whole system alive.

The system we've got is the inversion

Now hold that picture of nature up against our current financial system.

The financial world is also a giant network of nodes — but it's been built upside down. Central banks sit at the top like over-lighting nodes, the retail and commercial banks feed into them, and every business, investor, regulator, and payment gateway is a node underneath, all funnelling data and control upward to a handful of points at the centre.

That's what I call the matrix. It's the artificial construct that moved away from what's natural. And here's the thing about a system with everything running through a few central points: it's fragile. It has single points of failure. It's already starting to break down under its own weight.

Nature never makes that mistake. Nature spreads the load.

Why "more nodes" is the whole game

This is the genius of blockchain, and it's a direct copy of how nature already works.

On a proper decentralised blockchain, every node holds a complete copy of the ledger. They constantly check with each other — validating transactions in fractions of a second, all having to agree before anything is confirmed. No central authority holds the master copy. No single computer can be knocked over to bring it all down.

The result? The more nodes, the stronger and more decentralised the network becomes. There's no single point of failure — instead you've got thousands of points of success. It's the reason a decentralised blockchain has, to my knowledge, never been hacked. (Smart contracts and bridges have been exploited — but the underlying chain itself? Never directly.) You literally cannot take it down. At worst a chain goes dormant, but it can't be destroyed.

That's not a software feature. That's a law of nature, borrowed.

The different flavours of node (the plain-English version)

If you want to go one level deeper, here are the main types you'll come across:

Full nodes hold the entire ledger and do the heavy lifting — they need a decent computer with plenty of grunt. Light nodes are the streamlined version that only store the essentials, light enough to run on a phone. Mining nodes are the proof-of-work machines (think Bitcoin) that solve cryptographic puzzles to add new blocks — though these have become dominated by big players now. Validator nodes are the proof-of-stake equivalent used by smart-contract chains like Ethereum and Solana, and they often handle staking rewards too. Master nodes are full nodes with bonus powers like instant settlement, governance voting, and privacy features. And payment nodes quietly route the fees when someone spends crypto on a card at the checkout.

Don't worry about memorising that. The point is simply this: it's a rich, living ecosystem — exactly like the layered systems you find in nature, from cells to organs to whole organisms.

The part nobody codes into the software

Here's where I'll get a little deep on you, because this matters more than any of the tech.

In nature, everything collaborates. The air isn't at war with the fire. The water isn't trying to conquer the earth. They work together for the good of the whole ecosystem. We humans are the odd ones out — we compete, we dominate, we serve ourselves first.

And that's the real fork in the road for this new financial system. The technology is only ever as good as the consciousness of the people building and running it. Build it with an intention of control and domination, and that's exactly what you'll get — a shinier cage. Build it to genuinely serve people, and you get something that sets them free.

The good news? I see more and more people choosing the second path. That's the whole reason DeFi Freedom exists.

We are the link in the chain between nature's networks and these new technological ones. Which means the inner work — your intention, your mindset, your alignment — isn't separate from the money stuff. It is the money stuff.

Where to start

If this landed somewhere new for you, here's your simplest next step:

Next time you hear the word "decentralised," don't picture a server farm. Picture a forest. Picture your own body. Picture a system with no single boss, where every part carries a copy of the whole and looks out for the network. That mental model will take you further than any price chart.

Then, when you're ready, start learning what running or supporting a node actually looks like in practice — because being part of the network, rather than just a customer of it, is where the real freedom lives.

You now know something most people don't. Use it wisely.
